Field Trips

Hello Parents,

We will be taking five off campus trips in the next month. Three of the trips with be to Douglas Creek. At Douglas creek we will be studying water quality, velocity and conducting other experiments. If you have questions, I suggest you look at the Douglas Creek blog found under great links on our blog. We will also take a trip to Van Winkle orchards to talk with an entomologist about the insects found in an organic orchard and how they help or hinder the farmer. Finally we will travel to Badger Mt. to hike down the back trail, collect insects, look for animal sign, create a photo point of the ski hill, and participate in various science games.

Please make sure your students permission slips are turned in as soon as possible. Also if you are interesting in joining us please let me know.

Thanks

Justin

Blood and Guts

Have you ever wondered what is in a human body. Well its blood and guts. We got to see that when the Pacific Science Center came to town. We got to go to the town hall and there was all of this stuff set up about the human body. There was a little test about what your kidney looks like then you choose a kidney. Also there was a little balance beam. Where you could make it more complicated. My favorite was the X Rays you choose a X Ray to look at.I saw a X Ray of a whole leg. It was a great thing that Blood and Guts came to Waterville School.

The Pacific Science Center

A few days ago the Pacific Science Center came to Waterville School. I am going to tell you about that spectacular day. An instructor named Miranda came to our class to teach us about our eyes. Miranda brought a tool to help see inside our eye. One thing we did on that day is look at our own eye balls with Miranda's help. Inside out eye was gushey stuff moving around. It was realy wierd. Did you know that our pupil is a hole in our eye, but it is a very small hole? We also talked about how many parts are in our eye. Our eye is always moving and showing pictures in our head. The Pacific Science Center was awesome! The whole class had a great time.

My Trip to San Francisco

Nine years ago when I was a baby I went to San Francisco. I never knew one place could be so beautiful. The San Francisco Bay glittered in the sun like a jewel.

We went to my uncle’s huge house. I had a lot of fun. We played play station in his room on a massive TV.. My uncle is a really nice guy. He always helps us out when our family has a problem. We had dinner and drove to my aunt’s house to sleep for the night. I slept in my aunt’s room. It was a fun experience to sleep there. In the morning we had to go outside and play. We mostly played soccer and baseball.

Four days had passed and we packed our bags and headed back home. The whole way back we pretty much got stopped by traffic and all my brothers fought who was going to play first when we made it back to Waterville. We finally made it home after a long trip. My trip to San Francisco was fun.

me and my friend

My favorite friend Alyssa is very nice. Alyssa and I are good friends.

After school on a warm February day we had lots of fun.
I went to the bike rack and got my bike. I waited for Alyssa, Jaydon and Peter. I had so much fun as the breeze hit my hair. When we got home we started to do my chores and after we did chores we played.

Alyssa and I played many games.
The games we played were tag, rode bikes, Barbie, homework and video games. My friend and I had so much fun until I had to leave to go to 3on 3-basketball practice.

As you can see I had lots of fun with Alyssa and Jaydon. Alyssa continued to have fun with my mom.

Arbby was a great cat

My great cat Arbby
One of my favorite cats ever was named Arbby.

Nine years ago my dad found this cute black and white kitten. My dad was bringing in groceries from the restaurant Arbbys when he spotted the little kitten being attacked by furious crows. He ran over and scared the crows away. He took a good long look at the small black and white kitten and named her Arbby. The reason we named her Arbby is because we found her in the Arbby’s parking spot.

When we dropped her home she was scared of my dog Bakoo. All her life she was scared of Bakoo. One time Bakoo walked up to Arbby and she started hissing but Bakoo kept getting closer. Suddenly Arbby took her little kitty claws and gave him a scratch on the nose. Bakoo went whimpering off.

After she became older, when we got home from school she would put her two sweet little paws on our shoulders and give us a kitty hug. I loved the feeling of her fuzzy fur on my face.

Seven years from when we found her my sisters and I came home from school. Arbby was no where to be found. We went racing to find her and couldn’t believe what we found. My dad was in the back yard digging a hole. He told us that Arbby had a good long life but she suddenly had a hard time breathing and died. We all felt very sad to hear that our favorite cat was dead.

Whenever I see a cat, I still think about my black and white furry friend.

My 9th Birthday Party

My 9th birthday

On my 9th birthday my best friend Travis came to the badger mountain ski hill.
When we all arrived we gathered our sleds and we headed to the hill.

After going down the hill a few times we discovered an awesome miniature drop-off called drop-off canyon. My buddy Travis fell off the sled and at the same time hit his teeth on the handle. Ouch! He then fell off and hit the canyon wall with a crash. I went down the hill laughing at Travis but then crashed.

After that we went to the lodge and opened presents. My favorite present was a Lego Halo set. It was awesome! At the end of the party I ended up with 35 dollars. I said good by to all my friends and went home and ate dinner.

My 9th birthday was the best birthday yet.

Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

We have been doing a many different activities this week.

One of the activities was we were learning about rocks. Today we had a cookie shaped rock, it was fake, and we pounded it up with a stick. Then we put it out on a plate. Next we sorted the minerals out. We learned that rocks are made out of many materials while a mineral is only one material.

Another activity we did this week is we made our own graphs about our math scores. We will show you the graphs during our conference. Everyone is still working to be ready for the conferences.

Also we have been observing our plants. Our plants are growing very fast. We are making graphs and writing our observations down every few days. Some of the plants stink because they are being watered with milk.

Finally we did a sit spot this week. A sit spot is were you sit down and observe what is around you. We heard all kinds of birds and interesting things.

As you can see we had a very busy week.

Sincerely

Your Kid

My First Kitten

My first Kitten

When I was five I got my first cuddle, cute, soft, kitten. I never thought that I could have a more perfect kitten.

I got my baby kitten at a camping sight. It was a warm sunny day in Yogey Bear park .My Mom said,” We should stop by the pet shop." When we got in I saw the cutest kitten in the world. I said, “ Mom can I get that kitten.” She said, “Sure.” It was the best day ever.

When we got to the trailer I let him down and named him Yogey. Yogey loved to play under the couch. He played under there all day long.

Yogey liked to be hyper. When we got home. I let him down and I got out his toy mice that I bought him. He thought that they were real. He attacked one with his claws and sharp teeth. The fake fur began to fly and he ripped it apart and ate it. I thought that it was hilarious.

Three years later, Yogey mystery disappeared. We think he died, from an owl or a coyote. As you can see Yogey was a great super kitten.

Dear Parents,

Today we went to the wonderful island of Maui! Just kidding, however we did have an interesting week. First we just finished planting our experiment. So we have created different experiments with plants like, watering them with orange juice, soda, milk, sugar water, and salt water. We have also changed the soil and planted the seeds in flour, horse manure, soap and sand. It will be interesting to see what happens. Also we set up a photo point. To set up a photo point we had to learn how to use a GPS, compass, measuring tape, and camera. After taking the pictures we downloaded them and went on Google Earth. We used the coordinates to place the pictures exactly were they belong on a map. It is called Geo Tagging. Finally we had a visitor from Washington DC. He is from a mapping software company called ESRI. It is a huge company in California. His name is Charles Fitzpatrick and if you Google search him you will find him mentioned in magazines like the National Geographic. In conclusion even though we never took and airplane to Maui we still had a very busy week.

Sincerely,

Your Third Grader

Weekly Letter

February 19, 2010
Dear Parents,

We have done so many exciting things this week and I will explain a couple of them to you. First we have been working on our ancestor papers. We have taken notes about the country they came from and now we are starting to write a paragraph describing the old country. On the computer each of us is making a publisher flyer that tells information about our ancestors. Next each of us has made a mission statement. A mission statement talks about what we are trying to become. We created the mission statement typed it and put it on the wall. Each day we are going to read the statement to ourselves and think about it. Each of us have the mission statement in our binder so you should look at it. In conclusion we have had a long and tiring week but it was very fun!

Sincerely,

Your Third Grader

Sassy

Sassy the medium size wild dog is so cute for four reasons. First my dog plays a lot of games. One game she plays is tag. When she tags you she digs here claws into your skin, it hurts. She also plays catch. When she gives the tennis ball back it is covered in slobber all over it. Another thing Sassy does is dig holes. Sassy will try to dig up anything she can get to. One time she was digging up my grandma and grandpa’s back yard but she gets in really big trouble. One time she was digging in my grandma’s back yard and she was trying to get to the front yard. As you can see Sassy does a lot of stuff.

Lego;s

If there is one thing I know about its Lego’s. Most logo sets come with four to five awesome people. My favorite guy looks dark blue. His head, legs, and feet are all blue except for three specs. He also looks like an odd blue man because. Next Lego city has lots of cool cop cars. One time me and my friend Sky made a Lego city of our own. Our city had a hospital and a police station we also had a awesome airport for our amazing stealth bomber. Now you know about Lego’s. Sincerely yore pall TJ . P.S. look for logo’s in stores.

Itsy Bitsy

If you would like to learn about my grandma’s cat Icy Bitsy read on. First I will talk to you about what Itsy Bitsy does around the house. She leaps all over the big house with here small little body. She runs like a tiny crazy cougar. Sometimes around the house you could never find her because she goes deep underneath my grandma’s couch. Also Itsy Bitsy is a crazy, jumpy, lumpy, cat. Itsy Bitsy is a crazy because she bounces off the wall like crazy. One time she was going so fast she could not stop and ran into another wall. What a funny cat. As you can see Itsy Bitsy is a funny cat.

Muffin, buttons

Muffin, Buttons

My furry, annoying, cute, little kittens Muffin , Buttons. First on Christmas we put a hat on them. When we put a hat on them they claw you. One more thing my cats do to us is hiss at use. Another thing we do with them is we play with them. When we play with them they claw you on the head. Something I do to get them back with my remote control. In conclusion now you
know a lot about my kittens.

Reading

Do you want to learn about reading? If you do read on. First, we are doing main idea in reading. Did you know that you should always do questions, predictions and connections before you read a story? For example, you look at the title Lady Bugs Lost and say," What is it about?" and make questions, predictions and connections. These are the questions I asked. Is it about lady bugs? Are they endanger? And here are some predictions. I think the story is about lady bugs and the Lady bugs are lost. I think the lady bugs will disappear. As you can see we are learning to be great readers.

Bear

Bear

I am going to tell you about wet, loving Bear. He is a crazy dog for several reasons. First, Bear loves to eat wet slobbering dog food. Bear eats very, very crazy. One time Bear was at my grandma’s house. Bear ran to his bowl and started hogging down the wet, crunchy, nuggets. Next, Bear loves to jump off wood docks. Bear jumps like a manic. One time I was heeded to the dock with Bear. When we got there he polled on his leash. I took it off. Then he started running and jumped off the dock and was running in the air. It was hilarious. Now you know why Bear is a crazy dog.

Meeting Our Goals

The goal celebration was fun for several reasons. First, the scavenger hunt was awesome. My team had Nick and Salvia. We had a hard time in the fourth grade room, but eventually we found the book, one about glaciers. Next, the commons was cool too because of the games. I played fosball with Aylssa, Lexie and Alexis. The catapult contest was exciting. Kids in any grade could make a catapult. Alexis needed my help to put in the mashmello, but when she let go, it broke. So I went back with her to fix it. Finally, she tried it, and it worked! Jocelyn won the contest, and Lexi finished second. Smores and pizza for lunch made the day spectacular! As you can see the goal celebration was a blast.

Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

One of the standards I am suppose to teach during the third grade pertains to what cultures influence the make up of our great nation, the USA. I want students to do a study on their family background and discover who in their family first entered the USA, when citizenship occurred, and where they came from. If you could help your student fill out the questionnaire below it will be a great help as we incorporate our studies into writing, reading, and technology. If you have a picture that could be used in your child’s report please email it to me. jgrillo@waterville.wednet.edu

Dear Parents,

We went to swim with the dolphins this week. Not really but we have had a really busy few days. First we have been working on learning about sound. We slammed tuning forks against the table and then put them in the water. You wouldn’t believe what happened. The water blew up all over the place. Did you know that sound can travel through water better then air? Or that tone can be changed by how tight you make a string. We have had a good time with all the different experiments. Next we have been working on multiplication. Many of us are doing very well because we spend time each night studying our facts. In conclusion, as you can see, we had lots of fun this week even though we didn’t swim with dolphins.

Sincerely
